Rize Ayder Plateau: Land of Clouds and Tourism Showcase of the Black Sea

Ayder Plateau in Rize's Çamlıhemşin district is the first name that comes to mind when you think of "plateau" in Turkey. This natural wonder, 1350 meters above sea level, backed by spruce and beech forests, is the most important gateway to the Kaçkar Mountains. However, Ayder is no longer just a plateau; it is a full-fledged tourism town combining nature, entertainment, spa and gastronomy.

1. Nature and Landscape: Every Shade of Green

The road to Ayder is a reason to travel in itself. As you travel along the Fırtına Creek, you will witness shades of green you have never seen before.

Geli Tülü Waterfall: This waterfall, which has become the symbol of the plateau, is famous for the fact that its water flowing from the summit of the mountain looks like a veil (bridal veil). It is located directly opposite the plateau and adds a fairytale atmosphere to the landscape.

Fog Sea: As a quirk of the Black Sea climate, the fog that suddenly descends on Ayder gives the plateau a mystical atmosphere. This natural phenomenon, which gives the feeling of walking on clouds, is unique for photographers.

At the foot of the Kaçkars: Ayder is not the last stop, but the starting point to higher altitudes (Kavrun, Huser, Avusor plateaus). The Kaçkar Mountains on its back are like a sanctuary for mountaineers and trekking enthusiasts.

2. Changing Face: The Clash of Traditional and Modern

Just like the contrast in Batumi, Ayder is undergoing a transformation of its own. It is no longer a deserted shepherd plateau.

Architectural Transformation: Ayder, which used to have only wooden plateau houses, is now a settlement full of hotels, pensions and restaurants. "Urban Transformation" projects are trying to prevent concretization and solve infrastructure problems such as parking problems.

Crowding and Popularity: During the summer months, Ayder can be crowded enough to make the busy streets of Istanbul look like busy streets. It is a transit point for those looking for silence and an epicenter for those looking for movement and sociability.

3. Activities: Adrenaline and Healing

Ayder is not just a place to look at the view and drink tea; it is rich in a variety of activities.

Spas: Ayder was first opened to tourism because of its healing waters. The underground hot springs are known as a cure for many problems from rheumatism to skin diseases and attract attention at all times of the year.

Swing and Zipline: Giant swings, which have become the "Instagram face" of plateau tourism in recent years, and zipline lines connecting the two sides of the valley are popular for adrenaline lovers.

Rafting: Rafting on the Fırtına Creek on the way to the plateau is one of the indispensable rituals of the region.

4. Gastronomy: Mıhlama and Trout Paradise

It is one of the places where you can taste the most unique flavors of Black Sea cuisine.

Muhlama (Kuymak): The magnificent dance of Rize butter, colot cheese and corn flour. It is indispensable for breakfasts in Ayder.

Laz Böreği: Although it is called a pastry, it is actually a dessert with sherbet and custard. It is recommended to be eaten with plenty of black pepper on it (yes, black pepper for dessert!).

Red Speckled Trout: These fish, which grow in ice-cold streams, are cooked in tiles or butter.

5. Transportation and Accommodation

Easy Transportation: With the opening of Rize-Artvin Airport, transportation to Ayder has become much easier. You can reach the plateau with a 1-hour drive from the airport. Since the road is completely asphalt, it can be easily accessed by passenger car (without 4x4).

Housing Options: From bungalow houses to luxury hotels, from family pensions to chalets, there are options for every budget. However, it is difficult to find a place in the summer season (July-August), so reservations are a must.

6. Climate and Recommendations

Four Seasons of Rain: Don't say "I go here in summer, it won't rain". The weather in Ayder changes hourly. You can get caught in a downpour while sunbathing. Make sure you have a raincoat and a thick cardigan with you.

When to Go? May-September is ideal for a completely green nature. However, it is also preferred in winter when it is covered with snow, especially for hot spring pleasure and "Heliski" (helicopter skiing).

In summary, Ayder Plateau is the "must" stop of the Black Sea routes, where the generosity of nature and the tourism appetite of mankind meet, fascinating people with its magnificence despite everything.
